WTXA Best Skipper, Reyes of Odessa Monday, October 25th , 1897 Tomás Reyes celebrated a successful season with the Odessa Cowhands by hosting team officials and select media at a Odessa area first-class eatery. But when he first came to town, the 1897 Association of Western Texas Manager of the Year was met with a good measure of skepticism. "Very few people believed in our ballclub when I got here. It just goes to show you that a bunch of talented ballplayers playing together can make any old manager a genius," a modest Reyes joked, not fully recognizing his own stature in the baseball community. However, baseball journalists duly noted his managerial skill as he skippered the Cowhands to a 53-43 record this year and a first place finish in the Association of Western Texas Odessa Circuit. |
