Torneo del Oriente División de Santa Clara Champs Crowned: Cienfuegos Elefantes Thursday, September 23rd , 1897 The Cienfuegos Elefantes are trying to accomplish something that's never been done before - hosting a Campeonato Nacional de Cuba parade in the city of Cienfuegos. They've taken the first big step, winning the Torneo del Oriente División de Santa Clara title. "We want to win a championship, that's our ultimate goal and something our franchise deserves," said starting pitcher Ramón Melgar. "Our coaches, GM and ownership have been behind us, it's time to make that effort pay off." The club's record sits at 49-44 and it is the 0 time they've won the division title. Team manager José Montes said it will be the "accomplishment of a lifetime" if he can lead the team to a championship. "It's what we've been working towards for so long," he said. |
