Columbus Comes up Empty Against Burns
Wednesday, August 4th , 1897
Dick Burns of the Milwaukee Brewers was on fire against the Columbus Solons at Recreation Park II today. He shut them out 2-0 on 8 hits, collecting 3 strikeouts and allowing no walks.
"The first two pitches I'm looking for an out, a ground ball or a fly ball," Burns said later. "I'm trying to get quick outs. I've never been a big believer in trying to strike a guy out from the very first pitch. It's too easy to end up behind in the count doing that."
On his stats sheet for the year Burns shows a 13-18 record, 32 starts, 242 innings, 57 strikeouts and a 4.72 ERA.
