Petroleros Tag Lobos with 4-3 Loss
Crowds lined up early in front of Parque de los Lobos, eagerly awaiting the start of the 1897 Liga Nacional Puertorriquena season. On the mound was Palamedes Cuenca for the visiting Penuelas Petroleros and José Medrano for the hometown Arecibo Lobos. In a spirited contest, the Petroleros pulled out the win, defeating the Lobos by the score of 4-3. Especially impressive was Palamedes Cuenca. In 9 innings, Cuenca surrendered 7 hits, while striking out 3 and walking 4. He allowed 3 runs.

Penuelas used the timely hitting of Julio Santos to seize the win. The catcher stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the ninth inning to put the Petroleros on top, 4-3. It was his only hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.

"If we keep winning the close games," Santos said, "we'll be in good shape at the end."
