Stevedores Edge Past Copper Lords, 2-1
|
Newport starter Donnell O'Brien put a stranglehold on the Swansea offense. The left-hander had complete command of his sinker in leading the Stevedores to a 2-1 win. In 9 innings, O'Brien surrendered 5 hits, while striking out 1 and walking 3. He allowed 1 run. The second-place Stevedores lifted their record to 24-21.
Runs were scarce in this one. So, Hermógenes Goris's at-bat in the top of the eighth was vitally important. With two out, the Newport catcher drew a walk, driving in 1 run, to give his team a 2-1 lead.
"I like the grit of this ballclub," Goris said.
