The Cardiff Arcadians beat the Newport Stevedores, 9-4. Cardiff pitcher and Winchester, England, native Connor Griffiths led the way. Griffiths, now 2-3, was the winner. In 9 innings, he gave up 7 hits, while striking out 1, walking 2, and allowing 4 runs. The Stevedores fall to 8-10 and continue their uneven start to the 1897 season.

Douglas Davies, the 1895 Head Boy winner , had a direct impact on the outcome. Davies contributed a 2-run single in the top of the fourth inning to put Cardiff up, 5-3.
