Abilene beat Lubbock on the strength of starter Errol Banfield's fine effort. The left-hander led his team to a win, 5-3. The Layabouts drop to 7-7 and continue their inconsistent start to the 1897 season.

Felipe Marando had a clutch at-bat with two out in the bottom of the sixth for the Preachers. Coming up with the bases loaded and Abilene trailing 3-2, he hit a 2-run single.

"Winning the game is always the first objective," Marando said.
