The rain made it unbearable at times; nonetheless, the faithful who endured the elements enjoyed themselves.

With first baseman Billy Earle leading the charge, the Cincinnati Reds defeated the Boston Beaneaters, 7-6, at League Park II 1894-1901. Earle, who finished 3rd in the NL in on-base percentage with .444 in 1889, was 2-3 with a triple and a walk. Mike Smith got credit for the win, improving to 5-1. He allowed 6 runs on 12 hits in 9 innings.

Cincinnati took the lead in the bottom of the sixth. With one out and runners on 1st and 2nd, Mike Smith stroked a run-scoring single to make it 6-5, Reds.

"We'll kick back tonight, then get set for the next one," Smith said.

With the win, Cincinnati raised its record to 22-20.
