Cardinals Nip Phillies, 8-7
The Philadelphia Phillies inaugurated the 1897 campaign with a disappointing 8-7 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals at National League Park 1895-1909. St. Louis right fielder Jimmy Bannon had a big impact on the outcome. He was 4-6 with 4 singles, while adding 3 RBI and scoring once.

The game was at a stalemate until center fielder Dick Harley came to bat in the top of the 13th. Facing Philadelphia pitcher Ed Dugan, he hit a 2-1 curveball for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting St. Louis on top, 8-7.

"Big win," said Harley.
