Sorto, Pericos Take Dramatic Game 2 for 2-0 Series Lead
|
The Holguin Pericos went into extra innings against the Cienfuegos Elefantes but ultimately moved to within one game of the Campeonato Nacional de Cuba today. The Pericos downed the Elefantes in a 10-inning walk-off at Parque de los Pericos by a final score of 4-3. Holguin right-hander Armando Sorto had a commendable performance. He threw 8.0 innings of 7-hit ball. The win gives the Pericos a 2-0 advantage in the best-of-5 Campeonato Interdivisional.
The clutch at-bat came in the bottom of the tenth inning, when Holguin pinch hitter Marcos Huerta, facing Paul Slade, had a run-scoring single. It gave the Pericos the 4-3 win.
"Things broke our way today and that's great," Pericos manager Édgar Meléndez said. "It's important, though, to stay focused and not pat yourself on the back too much. We aren't done yet."
Game 3 is scheduled for Thursday at Parque de Cienfuegos in Cienfuegos.
