The Quebradillas Piratas inaugurated the 1897 campaign with a disappointing 5-3 loss to the Rincon Ingenieros at Campo de los Piratas. Rincon catcher Leovigildo Sánchez had a big impact on the outcome. He went 4 for 5 with a double and 3 singles, while adding 3 RBI.

The game was all tied up in the top of the ninth, until Sánchez delivered big-time for Rincon, stroking a dramatic 2-run single off Casiodoro Beovides. The game-changing hit put the Ingenieros on top, 5-3.

"We played a good game and came out on top," said Sánchez.
